Scarce, Gigolo Aunts and Dirt Merchants added to Safe and Sound: A 5-day Benefit in Response to the Brookline Clinic Violence

Morphine, Throwing Muses, Letters To Cleo Among 35 Artists At Feb. 1 - 5 Event


BOSTON, Jan. 23, 1995 -- Several Boston bands including Scarce, Gigolo Aunts and Dirt Merchants have been added to the lineup for Safe and Sound: A 5-Day Benefit in Response to the Brookline Clinic Violence, scheduled for February 1-5. Seven Boston area clubs will host 35 bands and solo performers including Morphine, Throwing Muses, Letters To Cleo, Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom, Kevin Salem and Janet LaValley, formerly of Tribe.

Scarce and Dirt Merchants have been added to the bill on Thursday, Feb. 1 at T.T. The Bear's Place in Cambridge, where they will be joined by Kevin Salem (who is producing Scarce's CD), Mary Lou Lord and Miles Dethmuffen. Gigolo Aunts, The Barnies and Ukla have been added downstairs at The Middle East in Cambridge on Thursday, Feb. 2 with Throwing Muses and Janet LaValley.

Proceeds from the week's events will benefit the Friends of Shannon fund, which was established in memory of Shannon Lowney, who worked at the Planned Parenthood clinic and was one of two women killed on December 30 in the Brookline shootings. Shannon Lowney also was the roommate of Jeff Cawthorne, one of the organizers of Safe and Sound and the drummer in the Boston band Plush, which will perform Saturday, February 4, at The Rathskeller, better known as The Rat.

Other additions to the benefit series are Cobalt 60, the Allstonians and Jennifer Trynin. The complete lineup for Safe and Sound is now as follows:

Morphine, Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom and Machinery Hall at Avalon. Advance tickets are available beginning today at the Axis and Paradise box offices for $15. A 10 p.m. wrap-up party at Mama Kin, a club opened in December by its owners, Aerosmith. This ska bill features Duck and Cover, Shannon Lowney's favorite band, plus Skavengers and The Allstonians. The Friends of Shannon fund is a charitable non-profit organization that was established to give financial assistance to health and human services programs, with a focus on health care and safety for women and children. The fund was started by Shannon Lowney's fiance, David Keene, and will be administered by seven trustees as requests for money are received. Examples of requests that might be funded include the hiring of personnel or the purchase/installation of a metal detector.
